In a quick u-turn, Bahrain's government announced in mid-April that it would not seek to disband the main Shi'a opposition party al-Wefaq, only several days after it announced its intention of doing so. Manama was heavily criticized by the United States for its initial decision, with the expectation being that attempts to marginalize the group would only risk radicalizing the opposition over the long term.
