According to activists in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the government has started clamping down on calls for greater political reforms, as authorities seek to ensure that the widespread social unrest so prevalent in other parts of the region does not spill over into its own borders. Nevertheless, the UAE's political environment will remain among the most stable in the region in 2011 in our view. With demands for political reforms growing, we expect the government to rely on a combination of economic largesse and stepped up security measures to quell the possibility of any outbreaks in public unrest.
