Sanctions: Further Tightening Ahead
May 2011 | Political Risk AnalysisIn line with our view, Western countries have sought to convince Iran to give up its nuclear enrichment programme through economic means rather than military intervention, and we maintain our view that this trend will continue going forward (see our online service, January 14, 'Escape Routes From Sanctions Will Be Limited'). Indeed, a series of unilateral sanctions imposed by the US and EU in recent weeks, along with new evidence and claims from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) against the Islamic Republic, indicate that the West remains firm in its belief that Iran's nuclear programme is a cover for weapons development and will continue to exert greater amounts of pressure to convince the regime to discontinue its nuclear enrichment activities.
