June 2011 | Risk SummaryThe United Nations Deputy Commissioner for Human Rights, Kyung-wha Kang has said that thorough investigations were needed into the violence that has raged in Abeyi and Southern Kordofan since May 2011. Fighting erupted between the northern army and southern-aligned fighters only months before South Sudan officially cedes from the north after Northern Sudanese forces marched into the contested region of Abeyi. Tens of thousands of people have fled their homes since the fighting broke out. The north claims that its forces have been moved to the area to maintain stability and protect civilians.
