Opposition Meeting Highlights Internal Divisions
June 2011 | Political Risk AnalysisThe gathering of Syrian intellectuals and opposition activists in Damascus on June 27 will have a net positive effect on the political crisis facing the country, in our view, though we see significant obstacles in the way of creating a unified opposition in the country. The conference was organised to outline a national strategy on how to end the current political crisis, and the Syrian government had allowed the meeting to take place. While we believe that dialogue among the opposition leaders will be positive for an eventual transition, we note that the various groups remain divided, which will hamper efforts at posing a serious challenge to the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
