Syrian military forces have stepped up their crackdowns near the country's borders with Turkey and Lebanon, sending Syrians fleeing to both countries to escape the political crisis. The army has been deployed in the northern town of Khirbet al-Joz, a key border crossing with Turkey, as military officials stated that armed groups were using the crossing to move back and forth between the two countries. While thousands have fled to Turkey, with some diplomats estimating that Turkish refugee camps may now be holding over 10,000 residents, the flow of Syrians to Lebanon has been much smaller in scale.
