July 2011 | Risk SummaryAccording to local press reports, Namibian President Hifikepunye Pohamba was hospitalised early in July for what was thought to be a mild stroke shortly before an African Union summit held in Equatorial Guinea. The president, who is 76 years old, was discharged and told to rest. Although the minister of presidential affairs said that the president is 'fit as a fiddle', some have raised the spectre of a succession before the 2014 elections. Constitutionally, Prime Minister Nahas Angula would become president if Pohamba were incapacitated.
