Sudan has become one of the first sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries to recognise the rebel National Transitional Council (NTC) of Libya as the legitimate government of that country. As of the end of August, Chad, Nigeria and Ethiopia were the only other SSA nations to have acknowledged the NTC, following in the footsteps of Libya's North African peers Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Egypt. At the time of writing, the African Union had yet to decide on whether it would recognise the rebel leadership as the government of Libya.
