Foreign Funding Ban To Level The Political Playing Field
July 2011 | Political Risk AnalysisWe believe the Tunisian reform committee's July 20 decision to approve a proposal prohibiting foreign funding of political parties is a positive step, stemming some of our previous concerns regarding progress in the country's political transition (see our online service, June 21, 'Political Outlook Somewhat Less Sanguine'). The committee's proposal bans any direct or indirect funding of political parties and non-state subsidies, sets a EUR30,000 maximum on private donations, requires independent audits of campaign contributions, and prohibits the distribution of monetary and in-kind benefits to voters (including charitable work).
