Despite its short existence, the Transitional National Council (TNC) has rapidly become recognised as the sole legitimate political authority in Libya by a host of countries and multilateral organisations across the world. Although repeated statements by TNC leaders have stressed that it is but an interim organisation that will attempt to guide the country towards democratic elections at some point in the future, for the time being it is the closest Libya has to a functioning government.
