Khanfar is credited with revolutionizing the Arab media landscape and has been praised in particular for his network's coverage of the Arab Spring uprisings this year. Khanfar said on Twitter that his goal of establishing the network as "a global media leader" had been met. He is to be replaced by Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim Al-Thani, an executive at Qatargas and a member of Qatar's ruling dynasty.
