Women in Saudi Arabia have been granted the right to vote in municipal elections, as well as the right to put themselves forward as candidates. The announcement was made during King Abdullah's speech on September 25. Women will also be permitted to apply for positions on the Shura Council, an advisory council to the King. Activists have long called for increased rights for women in the country, and campaigners have praised the reforms.
