In a surprise move, Yemen's President, Ali Abdullah Saleh, returned to Sana'a on September 23 after spending over three months in Saudi Arabia recovering from an assassination attempt. In a speech following his return, Saleh called for elections and a "peaceful exchange of power", though he is yet to sign a GCC-sponsored transition plan. Protestors have viewed the move as an attempt by the President to continue to cling to power, and his return is likely to lead to a further escalation of conflict in Yemen over the coming weeks.
