Minerals and energy minister William Ngeleja has said that Tanzania will raise the royalty payments on gold exports by the end of 2011. The government introduced a mining act in 2010 which raised gold royalties from 3% to 4% but this has yet to be implemented as the authorities have been in discussion with mining firms. Ngeleja has said that agreement on implementation of the higher rates has been reached and that the Ministry of Finance and the revenue authority are in the process of finalising the procedures. Tanzania's gold exports have tripled over the past five years to US$1.5bn
