The federal government of Nigeria deployed troops at the facilities of the state-run Power Company of Nigeria after workers there went on strike, demanding a pay raise of 50%, and demonstrating against plans to privatise the industry. Power Minister Barth Nnaji said the deployment was necessary to protect the country's power infrastructure and that the strike posed a threat to national security. The decision was criticised by members of the opposition, which accused the ruling government of being more concerned with profit from privatisation than employees' working conditions.
