December 2011 | Risk Summary

Zambian police have charged former Labour Minister Austin Liato with possession of stolen property after recovering ZMK2.1bn (US$415,800) from his farm. The money was hidden in two trunks buried under a thick layer of concrete. Liato is in police custody and was scheduled to appear in the court on December 2, according to police spokesperson Elizabeth Kanjela. The arrest is the first high-profile case in a bid to root out corruption, a key campaign promise by the new administration under President Michael Sata. Several other investigations of former government employees are ongoing.
