Macroeconomic Forecast South Africa

December 2011 | Macroeconomic Forecasts

BMI View: Across Southern Africa, we see regional food price pressures as broadly benign. Prices for maize (a food staple in the region) generally remain lower than this time last year. However, South Africa is an outlier: we see inflation risks as more notable here owing to the recent weakness of the rand as well as ongoing strong export demand for South African maize. We expect consumer price inflation to be recorded in the 6.0-6.5% range over the coming months.
