At least two people were killed in protests sparked by the detention of an activist protesting against high fuel prices during the opening of Niger's new oil refinery. Protesters were angry that the government will first sell off its stock of expensive imported fuel before cheaper fuel from the new refinery is allowed into the market. The protesters in Zinder, the country's second largest city, burned tyres and ransacked buildings, including a local Ecobank branch and a police station.
