Soldiers from the Ivoirien army, Forces Republicaines de Côte d'Ivoire (FRCI), killed six people on December 17-18. The incident began when soldiers beat to death a young man who tried to evade an FRCI roadblock allegedly used to extort bribes from traffic. The following day, the soldiers shot at a crowd who had assembled in protest, according to local media. The incident demonstrates the lack of discipline in the FRCI, which is struggling to integrate the ex-rebel Forces Nouvelles fighters with the remnants of the national army under Laurent Gbagbo.
