Sudanese police used teargas and batons to disperse a crowd of students who had gathered in late December to protest in support of villagers displaced by the Merowe Dam project on the Nile River. The Sudanese authorities have had to deal with several protests over the course of 2011 as protesters have sought to vent their anger about government policy, the rising cost of living and general economic hardship. Students staged demonstrations in January and February in an effort to emulate uprisings in North Africa. The government has dealt with all protests decisively before they have managed to gather momentum.
