In the wake of the disputed presidential election on November 28, Congolese security services prevented opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi from holding a rival swearing-in ceremony in Kinshasa on December 23. Police used tear gas and arrested dozens of opposition activists as they tried to gather at a stadium in the capital, but there were no signs of serious injuries according to witnesses interviewed by Reuters.
