January 2012 | Risk Summary

Kenya's High Court ruled on January 13 that elections will take place in March 2013 instead of August 2012 unless the coalition government collapses before then. The high court had been asked to decide on the date after different interpretations of the constitution led to confusion about when the poll should take place. The ruling leaves open the possibility that elections will happen before March 2013 if the government collapses as a result of one of the parties withdrawing from the coalition. In such a case, an election would be called within 60 days.
