There are a number of signs that international pressure on Bashar al-Assad's regime is easing. Arab League members have distanced themselves from the proposal made by Qatar on January 15 to undertake joint military intervention in Syria, due to fear that it would foster turmoil in the region, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov restated Russia's intention to block any move at the UN Security Council to impose sanctions on Syria or authorise the use of force.
