Recent events corroborate our view that a two-way civil war is developing in Syria. The insurgency of armed rebels and deserters from the military, who call themselves the Free Syrian Army (FSA), is overshadowing what began as peaceful protests. On January 10, President Bashar al-Assad vowed to "strike terrorists with an iron fist".
