The Tanzanian navy arrested five suspected Somali pirates near the country's Songo Songo gas field. Seven further suspects who were said to be manning a 'mother ship' were also picked up in Tanzanian waters by a Spanish naval vessel. The arrest of the five alleged pirates by the Tanzanian authorities brings to 23 the total number of people arrested on suspicion of piracy in Tanzanian territory in recent years. In 2011 the government ordered the army to escort ships which are involved in oil and gas exploration in a bid to protect them from the threat of piracy.
