The office of President Jose Eduardo dos Santos announced in late May that legislative elections will take place on August 31 this year. The election, which will be Angola's second since independence from Portugal, is widely expected to see dos Santos extend his 32-year stay in power. Although dos Santos has not confirmed that he will lead the ruling MPLA at the next election, his pronouncement in 2011 that he was ready to fulfil any mission the party gives him suggests that he will be at the helm.
