The smell of ammonia and several witness statements have cast doubt on the idea that the blast was an accident, as had first been suspected. The explosion, on Moi Avenue, follows a series of grenade attacks which have killed at least 40 civilians across the Kenya. The attacks are blamed on al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab militants, whose forces the Kenyan army is battling in Somalia as part of an AU stabilisation force.
