A total of 103 people lost their lives while 267 others were injured in a series of attacks across Iraq on July 23, the country's deadliest day in 2012. At least 35 attacks took place in the country's seven provinces, with the Islamic State of Iraq, an al Qaeda-linked group, claiming responsibility. The recent uptick in violence reaffirms our view that political risks remain elevated, and risks that the country will fall into a civil war are increasing.
