Teachers at public schools began a strike in late July in protest against poor pay and working conditions. On the eve of the strike, the government had warned that the strike was illegal because a dispute of pay was ongoing at the Labour Division of the High Court and that there would dire consequences if it was to go ahead. However, members of the Tanzania Teachers Union (TTU), who had voted unanimously for strike action, ignored the warning and did not attend work on July 30.
