August 2012 | Risk SummaryIn a further indication of the deteriorating security environment inside Lebanon in recent weeks, in mid-August two people were killed and 60 wounded in clashes between Sunni Muslims and Alawites in the northern city of Tripoli. According to security and medical sources, the fighting took place between gunmen in the Sunni district of Bab al-Tabbaneh and their rivals in the Alawite district of Jebel Mohsen. While the spark for the conflict remained unclear, it is increasingly apparent that sectarian tensions in Lebanon have reached near tipping point, as the ongoing war in neighbouring Syria gradually takes on sectarian undertones.
