August 2012 | Risk SummaryWater shortages in the city of Sidi Bouzid drove residents to protest in the first half of August. Demonstrators called for social change, and chanted slogans criticizing the government for failing to improve standard of living in the region. As demonstrations resulted in escalating tensions, approximately 45 protesters were arrested, and subsequently released. As citizens are increasingly dissatisfied with the country's slow economic recovery and persisting regional disparities, such protests will remain frequent over the coming months.
