Libya - Risk Summary

August 2012 | Risk Summary

Libya has seen a renewed wave of violent episodes in recent weeks, as the country marks its first anniversary since the fall of the Qadhafi regime. Car bombs exploded on August 19 outside the Interior Ministry and security buildings in Libya's capital, Tripoli, killing two people and prompting the arrest of 32 suspected Qadhafi loyalists. Other attacks have taken place throughout several Libyan cities, while assassinations of past members of Qadhafi's security services have become increasingly common. General Mohamed Hadia al-Feitouri, a former Qadhafi officer with a senior defence ministry role, was shot dead in the eastern city of Benghazi on August 10. The International Committee of the Red Cross has halted its work in Benghazi and Misurata, following repeated attacks on its staff.
