The ongoing clashes between the Syrian military and rebel fighters have significantly worsened living conditions for residents in some of the biggest cities across Syria. Indeed, the UN refugee agency claimed in September 10 that more than 1.2mn residents inside the country have been displaced since the beginning of the conflict, while the number of people in need of assistance has increased twofold to 2.5mn since July. With the civil war set to drag well into 2013 and violence continuing to increase, chances that the conflict can be resolved through diplomatic means have become virtually non-existent.
