October 2012 | Risk Summary

South Africa continues to be blighted by industrial unrest in the aftermath of the August 16 Marikana Massacre in which 34 striking miners were shot dead by the police. Several large mining companies including Anglo American Platinum, AngloGold Ashanti and Kumba Iron Ore have seen their output severely dented by strikes, and it is estimated that more than 75,000 miners are currently involved in illegal industrial action. Moreover, the unrest has spread beyond the mining sector, with 20,000 truck drivers having mounted a two-week strike at the beginning of October, causing oil fuel firm Shell to declare force majeure on fuel deliveries.
