Lebanon

April 2004 | Risk Summary

The Lebanese government is increasingly asserting its independent political identity and the visit by Foreign Minister Jean Obeid to Turkey in mid-April illustrated Beirut's attempts to nurture relations with regional countries, as it tries to move away from its reliance on neighbouring Syria. Obeid, who met with his Turkish counterpart, Abdullah Gul, is the first Lebanese foreign minister to visit Turkey in 21 years. BMI expects both Syrian and Lebanese relations with Turkey to improve considerably over the forecast period.
