Taxing The Tourists
June 2004 | Economic AnalysisFollowing the surge in the public subsidies bill, parliament has ratified new taxes, the bulk of which will fall on consumers of services. New legislation imposes duties on cars and increases existing levies on restaurant meals, mobile telephone services and international travel. According to the local Al-Ahram newspaper, the parliament rejected proposals to tax luxury items such as private jets, yachts and coastal holiday homes. While the duties on cars and restaurants will largely be borne by Egypt's wealthy classes, other tax rises are aimed at tourists. Sales tax for tourism transport services will double to 10%, while departure tax
