Coalition Uncertain On West Bank Plan
June 2006 | Political Risk AnalysisPrime Minister Ehud Olmert's Kadima party has formed a coalition government with runners-up Labour, the new Pensioners Party, and the ultra-orthodox Shas. Between them, these parties control 67 of the Knesset's 120 seats. However, this slim majority may not always hold on controversial issues, particularly the West Bank withdrawals that the prime minister supports, which will be the single most divisive political issue in Israel over the next year. The 12 Shas members of the Knesset (MKs) joined the coalition on the condition that they would not be obliged to support West Bank withdrawals. Olmert will therefore have to
