The Kingdom does not want a nuclear Iran on its doorstep, as bilateral relations have often been extremely tense. Until 1997, Tehran claimed sovereignty over Bahrain, and the Sunni-dominated Manama government has remained wary of the influence the Islamic Republic could exert on the islands' Shi'a minority.
