Dissolution Of Parliament Increases Risk Of Dissent
May 2006 | Political Risk AnalysisParliamentary elections will be held in June, a year ahead of schedule, since the new emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah dissolved the existing National Assembly in May, over a dispute about electoral reform. MPs, supported by public demonstrations, had called for the government to go further in electoral reforms aimed at reducing vote-buying, and had hoped to question the prime minister over the issue.
