Algeria was the latest al Qaeda target in July when it kidnapped and killed Ali Belaroussi, the Algerian envoy, and Azzedine Belkadi, a mission attaché. Recent attacks on diplomatic staff from other countries in the region (Egypt, Pakistan, Bahrain) seek to isolate the US-backed Iraqi government and sabotage growing links with fellow Muslim states. Positive responses to the incidents from the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC) and Ali Belhadj, the former leader of the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) have shocked many Algerians and cast doubts over the president's plan for an amnesty for remaining Islamic rebels.
