Bouteflika Sets Date For Amnesty Referendum

In August, President Abdelaziz Bouteflika announced that a referendum on his much-vaunted amnesty project would be held on September 29. The president's plan, which would offer pardons to rebels who surrender, is aimed at drawing a line under 13 years of violent conflict between Islamist militants and government forces. With the backing of the major political parties, including the main legal Islamist party, El Islah, the referendum is likely to approve the proposal. However, the president faces significant opposition from the families of victims and from human rights groups, who fear the amnesty will be a 'final denial of truth
