Summit Of Mixed Blessings

Tunisia’s authorities predictably touted the UN-sponsored World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) as a triumphant showcase for the country’s technological advancement. But the acres of column inches in the world’s press that were for once centred on Tunisia also shed some highly unflattering light on the country, leaving many questioning the wisdom of the authorities decision to host the summit – and the sanity of the UN for holding it in a country with an iron grip on media and free expression.
