Kabylie Goes To The Polls

Following the president’s dissolution of local councils in Kabylie in July voters went to the polls on November 24 in the predominantly Berber region to elect local leaders. The fresh election of officials fulfilled one element of a peace deal agreed between the government and Berber representatives earlier in 2005. Berber leaders had recommended a boycott of the 2002 elections after serious unrest broke out in April 2001; local councillors had therefore been elected on less than a 16%
