Plaudits For Human Rights Progress
February 2006 | Political Risk AnalysisIt is too early to speak of a Tripoli Spring, but real signs of progress on political reform and liberalisation are accompanying Libya's emergence from international isolation. The US NGO Human Rights Watch has provided a favourable report on the government's efforts to improve human rights, noting the recent release of 14 political prisoners and the general improvement in prison conditions. It says the closure of a special court that sentenced political dissidents and the allowing of international human rights organisations to conduct fact-finding missions and advocacy in the country, represents a step change in Libyan attitudes to human rights
