Prisoner Amnesty Wins Tunis Some Favour

Timed with the country's 50th year of independence celebrations, President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali announced the most dramatic prisoner release on the weekend of February 25-26. More than 1,600 prisoners were freed - 1,298 freed outright and 359 granted conditional parole. In total, 81 political prisoners were released, including more than 70 members of the banned Islamist Ennahda party, plus the editor of the Islamist newspaper
