Islamist Tensions But No Takeover

The Moroccan government has responded to efforts by Islamist group al-Adl al Ihsane (Justice and Charity) to widen its appeal to Moroccans with a clampdown that has resulted in hundreds of arrests. The specter of an attempted revolutionary takeover by the group has been mooted by various sources, but the group denies it harbours any such plans and we think such a prospect is improbable. However, tensions between the popular anti-monarchical group and the regime are likely to worsen unless steps are taken to resolve
