President Sam Nujoma - the only leader the country has known since independence - has announced that he will not seek a fourth term of office in the election to be held next year. Speculation about his intentions has dominated domestic politics for many months, and the news has been widely welcomed as a positive step towards cementing one of the region's truest democracies. Nujoma's successor will be chosen from a list of ruling SWAPO party stalwarts at a special conference in May, and will be the odds-on favourite to win the poll.
