The South West African People's Organisation (SWAPO), the only party that has ruled since independence in 1990, is the odds-on favourite, even though long-standing President Sam Nujoma is standing down. Its candidate is Hifepuneye Pohamba, currently minister of land affairs. Pohamba is seen as a staunch nationalist, and vehemently opposed to corruption in government.
