The World Bank ranks Malawi 165th in the world in terms of human development. Despite vast agricultural potential, the country cannot feed itself; this year some 1.3mn people will depend on food aid from abroad. At the same, many politicians have long lived ostentatious life styles, highlighting the huge disparity in living standards. In most countries, such divisions would be a recipe for social unrest, but in Malawi it seems that most of the population long ago resigned itself to its fate.
