September 2005 | Risk SummaryIn early September the main opposition Democratic for Democratic Change (MDC) signalled that it would boycott the elections, expected before the end of 2005, for the newly created 66-member senate. At the time, the MDC said that it was not prepared to legitimise what it regarded as one of the central planks of the sweeping changes to the constitution enacted by the government in August, and which have been widely criticised as anti-democratic.
